これらの日々、私は幾人ものとても楽しい人々と知り合いになった。A.スミス博士[注]とは私は幾度か地質学に関する長々としたおしゃべりをした。彼は回帰線を越えるとても面白い探検から最近帰ったばかりである。

幾日も私は外で夕食をとったのだが、それはマックレア氏(天文学者)とともに過ごした場合もあり、カーネル・ベルとともにした機会もあり、そしてまた J.ハーシェル卿[注]とともにしたこともあった。この後者の機会は長い期間にわたって私が享受した幸運のうちで最も記憶さるべき出来事であった。

サイモン湾[注]に帰った。悪天候が始まっていて、そのため通常よりもかなり長く私たちが留まることになった。

サリヴァン氏[ビーグル号の士官]とともに周囲の山々の地質におけるいくつもの興味深い地物を調査する長い散歩を行った。

"ケープで、フィッツロイ艦長と私はJ.ハーシェル卿と会うという記憶すべき幸運を享受しました。私たちは彼の家で食事しましたし、それ以外にも2、3回会いました。彼はとても温厚でしたが、彼の物腰は、私には最初のうちは、だいぶひどいように見えたものです。彼はとても快適な郊外の家に住んでいて、そこはモミやオークに囲まれていて、そのことだけで、あのように広々とした地帯では隠棲と快適さの魅力がとてもあります。彼は全てのことについて費やす時間を見出すようです。彼は私たちに彼自身が集めたケープ・バルブ[アヤメ科の植物]でいっぱいのきれいな庭を見せてくれましたが、後になって私は全てが彼自身の働きによるものだということを理解しました。 ハーシェル夫人はなんと素晴らしい様子の人なのでしょう。手短に言えば、私たちはそのお宅の中や周りの全ての物事にすっかり魅了されたのでした。"

During these days I became acquainted with several very pleasant people: With Dr A. Smith, who has lately returned from his most interesting expedition to beyond the Tropic, I took some long geological rambles. —
I dined out several days, — with Mr Maclear (the astronomer), with Colonel Bell, and with Sir J. Herschel; this last was the most memorable event which, for a long period, I have had the good fortune to enjoy. —1
16th
Returned to Simon's bay; the bad weather having set in caused our stay to be rather longer here than usual. —
17th
Took a long walk with Mr Sullivan to examine several interesting features in the geology of the surrounding mountains. —
1 In his Autobiography p. 107, CD wrote: 'I felt a high reverence for Sir J. Herschel, and was delighted to dine with him at his charming house at the C. of Good Hope and afterwards at his London house. I saw him, also, on a few other occasions. He never talked much, but every word which he uttered was worth listening to. He was very shy and he often had a distressed expression. Lady Caroline Bell, at whose house I dined at the C. of Good Hope, admired Herschel much, but said that he always came into a room as if he knew that his hands were dirty, and that he knew that his wife knew that they were dirty.' At the Cape, Capt Fitz Roy, & myself enjoyed a memorable piece of good fortune in meeting Sir J. Herschel.— We dined at his house & saw him a few times besides. He was exceedingly good natured, but his manners, at first, appeared to me, rather awful. He is living in a very comfortable country house, surrounded by fir & oak trees, which alone, in so open a country, give a most charming air of seclusion & comfort. He appears to find time for every thing; he shewed us a pretty garden full of Cape Bulbs of his own collecting; & I afterwards understood, that every thing was the work of his own hands. What a very nice person Lady Herschel appears to be,—in short we were quite charmed with every thing in & about the house.—

ハーシェル卿は天文学者としてはよく知られていますが、数学者や写真研究や多彩な人だったのですね。そして奥さんもすばらしいのですね。
それにしては、ウィキペディアの写真がどうも頂けないです。
